Linking to a Photo at Flickr

One of the nice things about running the photo gallery software yourself is being able to hook it right into the software for the main website. This is great because it gives you quite a bit of control over how to store and present the images. For instance on the old site all I had to do was drop the image in a directory and the software automatically presented it to the viewer. The only drawback was that it didn't allow for image captions or comments.

With Flickr all that is taken care of by the 'outside' host. However I'll need to figure out the best way to handle the images. Maybe posting a smaller image that links out to their gallery like the one in this post.

The image shown on this page is their "small" size which seems to work best. It's a scaled down version of the original, and it is what's shown on their preview page as well. To see the original sized image just click on it.

One MAJOR problem with this approach is "What if they go away". I mean if Flickr all of a sudden just ceases to exist what happens? The images themselves would still be safe because they will continue to exist in their original form on my hard drive. But, all the links to them scattered througout the Blog would be broken. That could be a BIG deal a year or two down the road.

New Photo Album

I signed up at www.flickr.com today to use it as a photo album. It will be sort of an experiment to see if it is more convenient and versatile (whew, wish this thing had a spelling checker) than the old site (which was home grown). So, this being the case please post comments on whether or not you find it easy to use. If it's more convenient for me to upload photos hopefully I'll be able to keep it better stocked and up to date!

The direct link to it is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dolnik/.

There aren't many photos there now but I'll take the next couple of days to get a BUNCH uploaded.

Dolnik Sports Blog

I've finished the separation of all the team sports content from the family content on this website. The team sports information can now be found at http://www.dolniksports.com.

It had been quite difficult in the past to setup a site for a new team so hopefully the new software will make it easier to setup and maintain.

dolnik.com Website

I've decided to re-do the dolnik.com website because the software previously being used has been flakey and I've been losing a bunch of past data. In the process I'll split out all the sports sites to their own domain. For this I'll be registering dolniksports.com at www.GoDaddy.com .

www.GoDaddy.com is a great place to register your domain as it's not only one of the very cheapest, but it also includes lots of free extras like email and hosting.

New Server

I ordered a new server for the dolnik.com website today, well, it's not really a server, it's a workstation (Dell Optiplex 620). And, it's not new... I bought if from Dell's Outlet store as a refurbished unit.

BUT... it's way better than the server currently being used which is an old Dell Poweredge 2200. When the 2200 was purchased it was a cutting edge server, running dual 233MHz Pentium II processors with 256MB Ram (the maximum this server will accomodate is 512MB). Contrast that with the new workstation which is a Dual Core, 3.0GHz Pentium 4 with 2GB of Ram! The new computer cost approximately $3000 less than the old server when it was purchased new in 1998.
